Round Two: Can You Wear Braces More Than Once?
December 4, 2025

Wearing braces as a teenager is almost like a rite of passage. However, many assume that once these appliances do their job, they’ll no longer be required in the future. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, as many adults discover their teeth have shifted over time. Read on to learn whether you can wear braces more than once and if something other than metal brackets and wires is possible.
Why Would You Need Braces Again?
Many adults find that as they get older, their teeth begin to shift out of alignment for many reasons:
- Age: Teeth change as time passes, much in the same way that your vision, weight, and other bodily characteristics do.
- Dental Injury: If you sustain facial trauma or dental injury of any kind, it can cause problems with your teeth and result in misalignment.
- Failure to Wear Retainer: The retention phase of orthodontic treatment is meant to last a lifetime, so if you did not wear your retainer regularly and have yet to do so as an adult, your teeth may have shifted.
- Wisdom Teeth: These third molars can erupt or become problematic between the ages of 16 and 25, and they can cause misalignment if they are pushing against healthy teeth.
How Can You Know If You’re Eligible for Braces Again?
The only way to know whether you can receive braces a second time is to meet with your orthodontist. They will evaluate your smile and decide what kind of treatment is required.
Based on the severity of your misalignment, as well as your preference for orthodontic treatment, there’s a good chance you’ll be cleared to start the process.
If you previously wore metal braces as a teenager but prefer a clear aligner system this time around, your orthodontist will need to determine if these discreet trays are sufficient to make the necessary changes to your smile.
Will a Retainer Be Necessary?
Yes, you will need to wear a retainer if you want your teeth to stay in their new location. If this is the reason you require braces a second time, you’ll likely be much more committed to the entire process this time.
You’ll need to follow your orthodontist’s instructions, especially when it comes to wearing your retainer.
There is no real age cap when it comes to wearing braces, so if you want to inquire about whether they’re right for you, don’t hesitate to ask your orthodontist.
