Can You Play Musical Instruments With Braces?

Are you a seasoned musician? Or are you interested in learning a new instrument? If so, then you may be wondering, “Can you play musical instruments with braces?” Fortunately, the answer is a resounding yes! While wind instruments will have the highest learning curve, patients who are straightening their smile with metal braces or clear aligners are able to continue playing during treatment. Here are three tips to help!

#1. Wax Up Your Braces and Wires

Most people don’t think about pressing the mouthpiece against their lips, but with braces this simple act can irritate your lips and gums once you start treatment. Fortunately, you can use orthodontic wax over the sharp edges and corners to prevent sores and cuts from developing. If the discomfort persists, you can talk to your orthodontist in Richardson about creating a full-wax appliance.

#2. Put in a Few Extra Hours of Practice

You know what they say, practice makes perfect! If you or your child have a recital or class coming up, then up your practice time until you’re comfortable playing with your new braces. Plus, the more you practice, the quicker the calluses in your mouth will develop. (This can be a bit uncomfortable at first, but it will save you a lot of discomfort in the long run).

#3. Be Aware of the Braces Themselves

Each smile is unique, so each orthodontic treatment is custom-made. While some patients will have braces bonded to the front of their teeth, others will have complex solutions that require tools like an expander to be used. Since this is placed at the top of the mouth, musicians who have been trained to place their tongue there may experience some difficulty. Patience is key as you work your way up to your previous proficiency!

If slightly misaligned or severely crooked teeth are hindering your confidence, then it is time to talk to your orthodontist about braces. Although the initial learning curve can be a nuisance, the beautiful smile you are left with at the end of your treatment will make the journey well worth it!
